Over the last few years, dentures have made leaps and bounds in what they’re capable of. They now look and fit better than they have before, meaning that denture patients can enjoy a quality of life much higher than ever.

However, as incredible as modern dentures are, they sometimes need a little bit of extra support in order to hold them in place. This is where denture adhesives come in. There are a variety of options available to you in terms of the denture adhesive you can use; here’s what you should know about each of them and what you can do to pick one.

What is Denture Adhesive?

Dentures are designed to adhere to the gums entirely via suction, but in some circumstances this isn’t enough to hold them securely in place. Denture adhesive is a substance used to hold your prosthetic in place, giving them greater stability and security than they may have otherwise.

What Kinds of Denture Adhesives are Out There?

There are three main varieties of denture adhesive out there. Each of them can be incredibly effective, so which one you pick ultimately comes down to personal preference. They are:

Creams

Denture adhesive cream is a gel-like substance that can be applied directly to the gums and will harden into place. These creams come in small tubes allowing for easy distribution, providing an all-day hold that can keep your prosthetic in place.

Powder

Denture adhesive also comes in a powder form that can be sprinkled directly onto the gums, which can make it easier to avoid overusing the adhesive to keep your dentures in place.

Strips

Denture adhesive strips are small, precut, and mess-free. They can be moistened with water then pressed in place, avoiding the need to worry about properly portioning out the denture adhesive.

How Much Denture Adhesive is Necessary?

Ideally, you shouldn’t need to use denture adhesive at all. Well-fitting dentures should be able to stay in place entirely with suction. If you do need denture adhesive, check the package of the particular substance you’re using to see what they recommend.

If you find that you’re perpetually using too much adhesive to keep your dentures in place, you may want to talk to your dentist about relining or replacing your prosthetic.
